Joint
MAP D-PHASE Scientific Meeting -
COST 731 mid-term seminar

19-22 May 2008 in Bologna, Italy

The Joint Meeting

The Joint Meeting will be organised by ISAC-CNR and ARPA-SIM; contributions are invited dealing with all components of these forecasting systems, showing previous experience with parts of, or the entire forecasting chain, preliminary results from the MAP D-PHASE demonstration period and specific technical or conceptual achievements. Topics for the meeting include:

  • ensemble modelling (atmospheric and hydrological);
  • high-resolution deterministic modelling (atmospheric and hydrological);
  • nowcasting;
  • uncertainty in observations;
  • data assimilation;
  • verification;
  • hydro-meteorological forecasting for decision support.

MAP D-PHASE

Demonstration of Probabilistic Hydrological and Atmospheric Simulation of flood Events in the Alpine region

MAP D-PHASE aims at demonstrating progress and improved understanding of processes related to heavy orographic precipitation due to the Mesoscale Alpine Programme (MAP). As a Forecast Demonstration Project (FDP) of the World Weather Research Programme this is being realised in true forecast mode and including all components of an end-to-end forecasting system and with a pre-defined evaluation protocol.

COST 731

Propagation of uncertainty in advanced meteo-hydrological forecast systems

The COST 731 Action focuses on the quantification and propagation of uncertainty in hydrometeorological forecast chains. This includes issues related to the quality and uncertainty of meteorological observations (in particular radar rainfall estimates) and forecasts, as well as the cascading of these uncertainties into hydrological forecasts. Finally, the Action will investigate how uncertainty measures for such forecasts can be exploited as decision support in critical situation
