The DA-EPS Workshop

The Expert Team on Data Assimilation and the Expert Team on Predictability and EPS of the Short Range Numerical Weather Prediction (SRNWP) Network, under EUMETNET, invite contributions to the Joint SRNWP workshop on Data Assimilation and Ensemble Prediction Systems.

Nowadays, it is plainly recognised the existence of a strong link between data assimilation and ensemble forecasting. On the one hand, data assimilation techniques require accurate estimates of forecast uncertainty in order to blend optimally the prior forecast with the new observations. On the other hand, ensemble forecasts are designed to estimate the flow-dependent uncertainty of the forecast, therefore a good representation of the analysis uncertainty is crucial, especially for short-range EPS.

Presently, not only is this link recognised from a theoretical point of view, but meteorological centres and consortia both in Europe and outside Europe have started to develop coupled ensemble - data assimilation systems. Both ensemble data assimilation techniques and methodologies to account for the analysis error in short-range EPS are being developed at several Institutions, bridging these two fields within an operational perspective.

There is also a growing interest towards the development of ensemble techniques for convection-permitting models (1-4km), in connection with the needs of data assimilation at these scales.

Due to the limited duration of the workshop, it is not feasible to cover all the aspects of DA and EPS. Therefore the workshop will be focused on the interlinks between data-assimilation and probabilistic forecasting, with emphasis on the scientific basis and solutions to technical challenges related to these issues.

There will be a few invited talks and a discussion session addressing the most recent results and future priorities.

The Workshop welcomes contributions as oral presentations and posters.

Presentations are welcome on the following subjects:

  • use of ensembles within data assimilation
  • how to account for analysis uncertainties in short-range ensembles

including dealing with the model error components in relation to these topics.

Information about registration, abstract submission and venue are available at: http://www.smr.arpa.emr.it/srnwp.

The deadline for registration and abstract submission is 30 November 2010.
