TIGGE LAM project description

the Limited Area Model component of
TIGGE
the THORPEX Interactive Grand Global Ensemble

TIGGE, the THORPEX Interactive Grand Global Ensemble, is a key component of THORPEX: a World Weather Research Programme to accelerate the improvements in the accuracy of 1-day to 2-week high-impact weather forecasts for the benefit of humanity.

One of the objectives of TIGGE is to develop a Global Interactive Forecasting System (GIFS), allowing forecasts from a variety of global and limited-area ensemble systems for effective prediction of the risks of severe weather.

The TIGGE project is leaded by the GIFS-TIGGE Working Group co-chaired by Dr. Philippe Bougeault from ECMWF and by Dr. Zoltan Toth from NCEP.

The GIFS-TIGGE WG has initially focused on the development of the global component of TIGGE, which will allow global ensemble forecasts from up to 10 global NWP centres to be accumulated in a large data base and to be made available to the scientific community.

Recently, a TIGGE-LAM Panel of Experts was established, chaired by Tiziana Paccagnella from ARPA-SIM, to support the development of the Limited Area Model Ensemble Prediction System component of TIGGE. This Panel should work in close coordination with the GIFS-TIGGE WG, in liaison with already existing LAM EPS initiatives and in coordination with the THORPEX regional committees.
